No. 4 - Summer 2004

Capitol Reef National Park - Torrey, Utah - 07/17 - 07/21/2004
Days 21-25 on the road. Part IIIa.

The panorama I was looking for. This is still not right however - the five separate frames are not quite blended properly - look for the changes in the color of the sky. Muley Twist Canyon runs behind all this scenery. if you look right in the center of the image, you can see what I called a "juvenile arch" in Part III, #16 of the Journal. Panoramas are difficult. First, the exposure has to be the same across the whole set of photos. If one side of your planned panorama is dark and the other side is light, you have to settle on something in-between and shoot all frames the same. That also means that you can't use a filter like a polarizer, which effectively changes density and color enhancement as the angle to the sun changes. You also have to keep the camera perfectly level as you rotate for each frame - which means a tripod with an attachment to keep the camera on the same plane when rotating. Additionally, all lenses, ALL LENSES, have some sort of distortion near the edges so you have to overlap enough so that the merge of each image takes place where there's minimum distortion - that's near the center of the image. I think that's the problem with this one - I didn't overlap the images enough. Whatever, I'll get it one of these days. You'll have to scroll to the right to see the whole thing. The road to the right is the graded gravel part of the Burr Trail - only a couple miles from the Notom-Bullfrog Road.
