The #69 Porsche GT Cup of TRG only made it 11 hours before a failure took them out. Coming out of the horseshoe in the infield, their right front tire is catching some air - typical of a stiffly sprung Cup car pulling heavy lateral Gs. The #04 BMW M3 of Sigalsport BMW didn't fare to well either. They made only the first 1 1/2 hours before a failure put them back in the transporter. |
The eventual winner. A Lexus Riley DP car sponsored by Target and driven by Scott Dixon, New Zealand; Dan
Wheldon, England; and Casey Mears,
Huntersville, NC. Over a period of 24 hours, the car ran an average speed of 108.8 mph for a total of 734 laps on the 3.56 mile circuit. |
The #59 Brumos Porsche Fabcar driven by Joao Barbosa, Portugal; JC
France, Ormond Beach, FL; Ted
Christopher, Plainville, CT; and
Hurley Haywood, Ponte Vedra, FL. This car dropped out for mechanical problems after 22 hours and 559 laps. Their average speed for this period was only 89.9 mph - they spent a lot of time working on the car in their garage. |
Local boys - at least local to me in York, PA. Apple Automotive Group is the largest auto dealer in the York area with several locations selling a variety of makes. This Porsche GT3 Cup car was driven by Tony Ave, Mooresville, NC; Rob
Stewart III, York, PA; Dave
Stewart, York, PA; Bob Gilbert,
York, PA; and Gary Stewart, York, PA. They finished reasonably well at 23rd overall and 11th in class. They went 636 laps in 24 hours. |
The #01 CompUSA Lexus Riley DP car was piloted by Scott Pruett, Auburn, CA; Luis |
Rush hour at the east horseshoe. This is a couple laps after the start. The start was rather strange - called a staggered start by the organizers, the DP cars (the faster cars) were led around the track behind a pace car and the GT cars (the slower Porsches, BMWs etc.) we about half a lap back behind another pace car. The DP cars started and then half a lap later, the GT cars started. It took only two laps for the DP cars to catch the last of the GT cars. The #39 Lexus Crawford Crown Royal DP car was driven by Christian Fittipaldi, Eddie Cheever Jr, and Patrick Carpentier. They were in contention to win overall until only 2 hours from the end when their engine expired. Your finishing position is determined by the number of laps you've completed, not by how long you were in the race. So they finished 17th overall and 11th in class. |
There must be something going on here - photojournalists line up behind the barrier outside the east horseshoe. |
The #52 Ferrari 360GT driven by Costantino Bertuzzi, Italy; Luis
Monzon, Spain; Bo McCormick, and
Philipp Baron. This car actually started the race in the wrinkled condition you see it here. They crashed hard on Thursday and apparently didn't have the spares to replace the tail. Most of the repair you see here is duct tape. They finished 58th overall and 29th in class after some 8 hours of racing. There were 66 cars in the race - 30 in the DP class and 36 in the GT class. |
