Ken's Journal - Summer 2003

Bonus Words and Pics

Well, here it is on the Sunday after Hurricane Isabel came booming through my little piece of countryside. I've had no power since Thursday evening at 8:30 PM and just had my phone service restored just an hour ago. Yesterday, Saturday, we spent the day removing a rather large piece of a tree that was trying to get inside my house. I suffered two small holes in the roof, two destroyed gutters and 12 feet of demolished rail on my deck. I gained -- a lot of firewood I probably won't use,  I lost a lot of leaves I won't have to rake this fall, I have a new view of the garage and I no longer have to worry about the moss growing on the deck surface or the roof as both are now in full sun!

A Friday morning view from the back yard -- notice that tree limb is not exactly standing on it's own. Second story on your left is my bedroom -- this was a real waker-upper!

Notice how we delicately dropped the limb so we could hack at it safely from the ground. The deck railing is what's called collateral damage.

Seen Sunday afternoon from the garage -- Notice my trusty generator at right center. It's been running 2 1/2 days non-stop powering my refrigerator, TV, computer and water. Also note the two patches in the roof.

I called my insurance company, Allstate, the morning after Isabel passed through. An adjuster called three days later and showed up a few days later to assess the damage. I received a check in the mail a week later! Pretty good service I'd say! I've since replace the lower gutter and painted this side of the house. The roofing can wait until next spring --
