A 1912 Metz. 4 cylinder, 22 HP, weight, 1000#. Factory Price, $600, later reduced to $495. Note the "monocle" windshield attached to the steering column. |

1901 was the first year of the Steamer. The two cylinder engine was in the rear geared directly to the back axle and the fire-tube boiler was under the seat. This proved to be a dangerous location (I'll bet!) and was moved under the hood for 1905. |

I forgot what the car is - but what a nice Flame Job! |

The rest of the trip home is uneventful except for the heavy traffic on I81 from Scranton on south, and the rain and fog from Hazelton to Harrisburg. For bad weather driving conditions, that one stretch of I81 from Hazelton to Harrisburg has to be one of the worst sections of Interstate on the east coast. Here we are at 3 in the afternoon, just past a downpour, 88 degrees outside and we run into fog so thick I loose sight of the cars in front of me -- at 65 mph -- Soooo, do you slow down or maintain speed? I arrive home at 5 pm. This will be the last Diary until my next trip in October. Then it will be Petit LeMans at Road Atlanta and on to New Mexico, Eastern Arizona and a quick shot into Utah before making my way back to Florida and the Everglades. Some of the stops along the way will be Graceland in Memphis TN (I'm no Elvis fan, but I just gotta see it!), the Cadillac Ranch in TX, Canyon de Chelly in AZ, Petrified Forest in AZ, Monument Valley in UT, Bosque del Apache in NM, Carlsbad in NM, Roswell NM, Big Bend in TX, and anything else between there and Florida. I leave home in mid-October with the goal to be in FL by mid-November or so. |
