Ken's Journal - Spring 2003

However ungraceful this bird is on land and in the air, it must be something to see underwater! It's got to be a skillful navigator underwater just to catch all these shiners at one time!

I only saw three or four bringing baitfish back to the nest. Except for this one, they were all too fast for me to catch with the camera. One of my fellow travelers, who has been here some seven times, said that it varies, sometimes they hang around a while with the baitfish dangling and at other times, they're like a bullet straight into the nest. This was bullet time!

The Puffin stands erect, like a penguin. It's clumsy like a penguin. It swims well, like a penguin. But it's not in the same family.

So this must be the Northern Hemisphere analog to the penguin - which is found only in the Southern Hemisphere.

This one is a little perturbed with something - or someone.

A puffin is usually silent, except when nesting it will sometimes make a sound like a low growl - sounds like a chainsaw sort of.

I don't remember any sound coming out of the mouth of this one. Perhaps this is a yawn.
